
Reality check: the problem of obesity in our society
According to some experts, 10 to 25% of teens and 20 to 50% of adults have a weight problem. It is ironic that the problem of weight is heavier than ever on the North American society despite the increasing emphasis in recent decades to weight control, exercise and reducing fat intake. For most people, going on a diet is to deprive oneself - hence the tendency to overeat when the scheme ended.
What is obesity? Obesity is a condition characterized by the accumulation of adipose tissue. Some health professionals define obesity according to the percentage that the body fat (body fat percentage), and when it comes to obesity the percentage is higher than 25% of the total weight for men or 30 % of total weight in women. The fat percentage recommended for men is 15 to 18%, it is between 20 and 25% among women. These percentages vary with age, increasing as we age.
