Good excersise for osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a complaint in which bones thin down over time making them vulnerable to fractures. This is more general among women than men especially post-menopause. Numerous studies have shown that exercise can improve bone density.

Resistance exercises such as weightlifting is two to three times a week is found to improve bone density. The bones that support the load during the year boosted to retain more calcium and increase density. Because of the effect of pulling the muscles around the bone weight bearing, bone building is stimulated. Any exercise that has the ability to put the force on the bone will strengthen it.

Some of the weight-bearing exercises are: running, walking, climbing stairs, weight lifting and hiking. Exercises such as cycling or swimming are not weight bearing exercises.

The exercise has a beneficial effect on overall general health. While exercise alone will not be able to increase bone density, it has the ability to reduce the risk of falls. This is attributed to the strength of muscles around the bone that improve by exercise. Although research has not been able to pin-point a series of exercises for people with osteoporosis, weight bearing exercises are often recommended.

For people aged 40 and over, or disorders such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes or heart complaint, exercise programs should be recommended by their doctor. Do not engage in an extreme form of exercise such as marathon running, as this could have a negative effect at the place and cause osteoporosis.
