In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV TR), the American Psychiatric Association classifies pathological gambling among the impulse control disorder and describes it as "an inappropriate practice, persistent and repeated game not related to a manic episode of another mental disorder, which results in at least five of the following events:
