Babe is a Holstein heifer whose owner decided to butcher her because when she was in heat “she would bellow loudly all night and keep the whole neighborhood up.” Maybe, she was just lonely. We haven’t heard a peep out of her since she came to live with us.

Chelsea, a blue ribbon goat, failed to get pregnant one season, so her owner decided to send her and Hadley, who had the misfortune to be borne the wrong sex to the market.

Clover is a gray Arabian mare that was being taken on the last ride of her life. Rodeoed when her young bones were too tender, she was a sad mess of bruises, cuts, scrapes including a lump so large our vet thought, she had been hit with a pipe. We found her skinny and dejected in a corner of a killing pen with mucous pouring from her nose. Today she frolics with her pals and shows off that free-floating gallop for which Arabians are cherished.

Swanee, a Hampshire pig, once so diseased that she was too small to slaughter. Today she weighs 800 pounds.
